Xerox wins production print contract

  • Award from Mirror Graphics of Chennai, India
  • Installed new Xerox Versant 280 production color laser system (made by Fujifilm)
  • Will be used to produce invitation cards, short runs, etc.

Ricoh wins production print contracts

  • Award from Bell & Bain of Glasgow, England
    • Installed a new Ricoh Pro VC70000 production color inkjet system
  • Award from Devendra Print & Packaging of Sonipat, India
    • Installed new Pro C9200 production color laser system

Ricoh takes over Toshiba Tec’s sales in Europe?

  • Toshiba Tec, a division of Toshiba, announced that it has decided to include Toshiba Tec Europe in its deal with Ricoh
  • Ricoh owns 85% of the joint venture, which carries the Ricoh name

Print hardware sales in Western Europe

  • IDC published the Q2 2023 Hardcopy Peripherals report
  • Units down 20.1% to 3.4 million units (includes all laser, inkjet, printers and MFPs)
  • Laser based devices up 1.4%
    • Color laser up 28.9%
    • b/w laser down 13.9%
  • Inkjet down 27.7%

Lexmark readies launch of new A4 devices

  • Lexmark, a division of Ninestar of China,  will be launching two new color laser devices and two new b/w laser device
  • (unknown if these models are impacted by the Dept. of Homeland Security’s order on products made by forced labor)
  • XM3350 MFP is a 50ppm, b/w laser A4
    • Document feeder scans both sides of original at same time
      • Holds up to 100 originals
    • M3350 is a print only version
  • XC2335 MFP is a 35pm  color laser A4
    • Document feeder scans both sides of original at same time
      • Holds up to 100 originals
    • C2335 is a print only version

Lexmark’s parent files lawsuit against US Gov

  • Ninestar, owner of Lexmark, filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, over Ninestar’s inclusion in the “Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act”
    • The DHS claims that some of the print hardware and consumables are made by forced labor in Zhuhai, China
  • Ninestar claims that the ban has resulted in the company “suffering irreparable hard to its business and reputation based on the listing”
  • “pursuing an injunction” to “halt the ongoing financial and reputation harm”

Canon launch of new A4 b/w laser printers

  • LBP246dw offers 42ppm print only A4 device
  • LBP247dw offers 42ppm, but also has 5” color LCD touchscreen
  • 1200x1200dpi
  • Security features standard

Canon launch of new production print

  • Now offering the new ProStream 3000 series of web-fed production color inkjet system
  • Handles up to 300gsm, 7 point thickness
  • Top speed of 436 feet per minute print speed
  • Uses piezo crystal inkjet printheads
  • 1200x1200dpi
  • Max print width of 21.88”
  • Total length of 47 feet

Canon wins production print contract

  • Award from Rex 3, a commercial printer in Sunrise, Florida
  • Installed a new Canon varioPRINT iX production color inkjet system
  • Will be used to produce custom-made trading cards, display boxes, packaging, brochures, pocket folders, pamphlets, transactional mail, postcards, etc.

OpenText makes acquisition

  • OpenText, headquartered in Canada, announced it has acquired KineMatik of Ireland
  • Maker of workflow automation, automated business processes, project management solutions
  • Purchase price not announced

Managed Print Services Association names pres

  • The MPSA announced that Eric Crump in the new president of the industry group
  • Is the Director of Strategic Alliances for Ringdale, maker of secure print release solutions

Hyland Software to get new loan

  • Group of private lenders are in talks to extend a $3.25 billion loan
  • Wants to refinance debt
  • Includes a $150 million revolving credit facility

Signs of recession?

  • Nancy Lazar, global economist with Piper Sandler, stated:
    • “Indeed save your pennies because unfortunately, the economic outlook is doing to get worse before it gets better”
    • “careful with your credit cards…It is a time to hunker down and to try to maintain your savings rather than get further into debt”
  • Moody’s Analytics report stated that consumers are spending $709 more on everyday goods in July than compared to 2 years ago.
    • One third of all U.S. households spent more than 30% of their income on housing 
  • Evergrande Real Estate has declared bankruptcy
    • Has $300 billion in liabilities
    • $19 billion in offshore debts

    • One of its competitors, Country Garden, which employs 300,000 people, missed two payments on its multibillion-dollar debt
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods announced that its quarterly profits declined 23% due to “organized retail crime”
  • Target Stores CEO, Brian Cornell stated that shoplifting that includes “threats of violence” surged 120% during first 5 months of the year.
  • The City of San Francisco is reporting that investors are buying up the city’s downtown at a 70% discount
    • One investor paid just $41 million for a office building that sold for $107 million in 2014
    • Office vacancies at 31%
    • Out of 203 retailers open in 2019 in the city’s Union Square, only 107 now remain
  • Freddie Mac reporting that 82% of property shoppers feel that they are  “locked into” their property due to high borrowing costs
    • Median house price = $372,825
    • Average monthly payment = $2168/mo
    • Median household income = $76,072
  • Macy’s Department Stores reported that its credit card revenue has plunged 36% due to rise in delinquencies
    • Fed data shows America’s credit card debt has swelled to $1 trillion
  • Dollar Tree Stores CFO, Jeffrey Davis, blamed the company’s 2.2% drop in profit due to theft of merchandize
  • Target Stores announced it has projected to lose $500 million this year due to theft.

CEO wants employees back in office

  • The CEO of Zoom, Eric Yuan, led the world in promoted people working from home
  • He now says that “employees need to come back to the office –  because it is really hard to work over Zoom”
  • Remote work “hurts ability to come up with great ideas”
  • “cannot have a great conversation” unless in person
  • “we cannot debate each other well, because everyone tends to be very friendly when you join a Zoom call”

  • 10,000 people attended event at Epic’s headquarters in Verona, WI
  • 178 million patients have their clinical records stored in Epic, up 15%
  • 32 hospitals implemented Epic’s EHR last year and 36 more are in process

ESPN star violates HIPAA

  • Stephen A. Smith discussed a meniscus injury of NBA star, Lonzo Ball
  • Lonzo Ball asked Smith who his sources where, and Smith identified Ball’s doctors, and that he apparently coerced them to give him the information, which is a HIPAA violation
  • Unknown if ESPN or Smith will be fined for this violation

    • “digital fax document can be interrogated using NLP, OCR or other technology to extract clinical data that can then be inserted into other healthcare workflows”

    • “digital fax documents can be interrogated using NLP, OCR or other technology to extract discrete patient and document identification data for the purposes of patient records matching”
  • Stage 2 was given to Biscom, Consensus (eFax)
    • “documents can be integrated into administrative, clinical or financial applications, either inbound or outbound, faxes can be automatically routed to individual patient records using AI, NLP, OCR or other”
  • Stage 1 was given to others
    • “can be integrated with administrative, clinical, financial applications to send faxes from within existing workflows’

HIPAA/cybersecurity breaches in the news

  • El Centro Del Barrio Health, aka CentroMed of San Antonio, TX notified 350,000 patients that their PHI was exposed after hacking incident.
  • Tesla Corp. notified 75,735 employees that their confidential info was exposed after data breach.
  • Crozer Health of Pennsylvania, which was hit by ransomware on 8/3/23, stated that it got its systems back on line on 8/22/23.
  • SecureWorks researchers are warning healthcare of new “Whiffy Recon” that uses WiFi to identify vulnerable devices for hacking.
  • University of Buffalo Dental Clinics of New York notified 765 patients that their PHI was exposed after cyber attack.
  • UNUM Group, headquartered in Chattanooga, TN notified 531,732 patients that their PHI was exposed after cyber attack.
